About Us:

The Center for Youth & Family Investment (CYFI) is a District of Columbia 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing and facilitating extended learning opportunities, supplemental educational services, and after-school programs to public and charter school students. CYFI promotes a holistic approach to its services – a belief that the domains of our children lives are interconnected, and that the needs of the “whole” child must be supported as we assist them in acquiring the skills, experience, and attitudes they need to be successful, contributing citizens.

Currently, CYFI operates its Friendship Cares Before- and After-Care Program at the Chamberlain, Woodridge, and Southeast Elementary campuses.

Position Summary:

CYFI is seeking Lead Teachers for its Friendship Cares Before- and After-Care Program for children in Pre-K through grade 6. The Lead Teacher is responsible for planning and executing the educational program in accordance with the purpose and goals of Friendship Cares. In addition, they are responsible for the general supervision and management of the Teacher Aides and/or Group Leaders. This part-time position (3 hours/day Mon-Fri) is based at the school site and reports directly to the Director of Extended Learning Programs.

Responsibilities include:
• Plan, supervise, and implement the program for the class in accordance with the policies and philosophy of Friendship Cares.
• Gear the program to the needs of individual children with concerns for their interests, handicaps, special talents, and individual style and pace of learning.
• Treat children with dignity and respect.
• Consider individual children in relationship to their cultural and socioeconomic background.
• Plan and implement appropriate early childhood education experiences with a variety of materials in the fields of art, music, literature, science, etc.
• Assume an equal share of the joint housekeeping responsibilities for their classroom.
• Attend all staff meetings. Plan and implement one staff training meeting each school year.
• Participate in recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and other aspects of professional growth, maintaining current knowledge of early childhood practice.
• Effectively train, supervise and utilize teacher aides, group leaders, and primary floaters.
• Contribute to staff in-service training by planning, leading, or assisting in a workshop presentation or by developing resources.
• Conduct parent conferences on each child’s school adjustment, classroom behavior, and developmental progress.
• Plan and implement methods of establishing a positive liaison with parents. Communicate frequently with parents informally, with periodic notes and verbal communication as well as a Parent Letter at least monthly.
• Assist in public relations events sponsored by the school.
• Supervise all activities to ensure safety at al times.
• Prepare daily attendance report for children in assigned group.
• Help children establish good habits of personal hygiene.
• Maintain a professional attitude and loyalty to CYFI at all times.
• Supervise upkeep of all educational equipment and materials in assigned area.
• Help children to become aware of their roles as integral members of a group.
• Maintain progress records of each child’s growth and development, prepare periodic reports, and review with After-Care Coordinator and parents.
• Be responsible for the ordered arrangement, appearance, décor, and learning environment of the classroom and its learning centers.
• Work with parents to promote understanding of their child’s growth and development; encourage parent participation in school programs; conduct conferences at request.

Minimum Requirements:
Knowledge
• Knowledge of child development and early childhood education.
• Proven experience maintaining clear boundaries and setting age-appropriate discipline standards for children using non-punitive measures.
• Fluent in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet.

Education and Experience:
• A degree (Associates or above) in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or equivalent, or
• A CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential with at least one year of experience working in a regulated child care environment, or
• Bachelor’s Degree (ECE/Child Development major/emphasis) and one year teaching experience or

Preferred:
Teaching credential, Child Care Certificate or Bachelor’s degree; Familiarity with District of Columbia Day Care Licensing Rules. Experience supervising adults strongly preferred.

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must pass Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) criminal background check. First Aid and CPR certification.

Compensation: Competitive nonprofit salary; Negotiable based on experience; Salary history required.
