Job Description
Under general supervision, assumes responsibility for the nursing management and evaluation of care provided to patients who participate in the practice of breastfeeding. Functions as a primary care provider in collaboration with physicians and other health team members. Plans, implements and evaluates educational programs related to breast feeding.

Education:

  • RN

Licensures/Certifications:

  • Current registration with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses as a Registered Nurse.
  • IBLCE Certification preferred.
  • Completion of "Healthcare Provider" CPR course, per hospital requirements.
  • Experience:
  • 2 years full-time (or equivalent) directly related clinical experience
  • Skills:
  • Knowledge of techniques and the application of lactation theory.
  • Skill in written and oral communication
  • Skill in using computers and personal productivity applications
  • Ability to instruct and support patients
  • Ability to assess patients, plan effective interventions and evaluate outcomes from those interventions.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assesses physical, emotional, social and economic needs of breastfeeding mothers:
  • Develops a plan of care for intervention
  • Evaluates effectiveness of actions and initiates appropriate changes
  • Assists in managing breast feeding with appropriate medical consultation.
  • Identifies difficulties experienced by the mother/baby couple
  • Maintains open communication with patient, family, and all members of the health care team.
  • Provides follow-up support and care including counseling and teaching on an individual, family or group basis.
  • Provides consultative services to the health care team members on all aspects of breast feeding. Provides lactation consultative services as needed. Serves as a consultant, resource nurse, and role model for GBMC nurses. Facilitates change.
  • Identifies and reviews current clinical information regarding the scope of practice in lactation support. Develops standards of practice for breast feeding mothers
  • Assists in the planning, implementation and evaluation of in-services and continuing education programs on the care of breast feeding pairs (mom and infant) and related topics. Encourages staff to participate in the clinical learning programs.
  • Makes recommendations for continued development and enhancements to the program.
  • Evaluates and selects support items used to aid Mothers who breastfeed. Aids in the tracking, maintenance, cleaning, and evaluation of lactation related equipment.
  • Arranges / facilitates referrals, when appropriate, to other health care professionals, community services, and support groups.
