This is a Senior Data Scientist position that will tackle projects across a variety of departments including Underwriting, Operations, Actuarial and others. Most of the work involves building machine learning models, so you should be experienced in building and evaluating predictive models and you should have experience effectively leading collaborations with other business units, with a proven track record of delivering meaningful and relevant solutions. Your solutions will be deployed to production systems through APIs, so you should be prepared to partner effectively with IT. You should also know how to document your work in a thorough and organized fashion so regulators can clearly understand how you create and test your models. Senior management has a high level of interest in Data Science, so you will periodically need to create presentations that persuasively communicate the value of your solutions, making use of visualization techniques as appropriate.

The overall objective of this position is to support the management of all insurance product lines by creating analytical solutions that are actuarially sound and statistically rigorous, focused on: (1) developing and maintaining the capability to understand and proactively influence the drivers of customer behavior, (2) optimizing the use of data in the risk pricing and underwriting process, (3) designing experiments, testing hypotheses, building models, and conducting advanced data analysis using modern analytical platforms. Most of the coding is done in Python

Responsibilities
    Analyze and solve a broad range of problems in the actuarial, underwriting, operations, risk and marketing domains, and communicate the results, advantages and limitations of the methodologies used in the analysis.
  • Develop predictive modeling solutions for Underwriting, focused on the detection of non-disclosure and misrepresentation in reduced-requirements underwriting environments.
  • Perform protective value analyses to identify opportunities to order fewer Attending Physician Statements and Lab/Exams, facilitating our drive toward higher straight-thru processing rates
  • Identify key drivers of placement and turnaround times by analyzing underwriting operations data
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts to understand their needs, identify and collect relevant internal and external data, then build and deploy usable solutions
  • Reduce risk and maximize value-add by utilizing streamlined and automated processes and techniques
  • Provide business metrics for overall projects to show improvements.
  • Develop a continuous internal and external mechanism to collect and analyze underwriting technology and techniques to place and maintain LGA on the forefront of emerging practices.
  • Develop a set of actionable parameters of post issue health changes and lifestyle patterns and support the creation of a business model based on those parameters.
  • Provide ad hoc support to additional areas and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education

  • Master's degree in Statistics/Mathematics/Computer Science/Data Science or quantitative field equivalent, PhD a plus.

Experience/Knowledge

  • 5+ years of work experience (2+ with a PhD), with experience working on analytical projects, including data extraction, predictive modeling, visualization.
  • Experience/familiarity with Life insurance, Actuarial science or Health data a plus, but not required.

Skills

  • Proficient in statistical data analysis and predictive modeling with Python
  • Fluency in at least one visualization software such as Tableau (preferred)
  • Strong applied experience with standard predictive modeling techniques such as GLMs, Gradient Boosted Machines and other Machine Learning models
  • Understanding of inference, and the role of randomization
  • Familiarity with basic simulation techniques, such as Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Understand how to analyze large, complex datasets with many variables, and prescribe action
  • Good working knowledge of SQL
  • "Self-starting" with internal motivation and initiative
  • Demonstrates the following scientist qualities: clarity, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic, significance, and fairness
  • Strong organization and documentation skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Basic understanding of behavioral economics
  • Experience with life insurance or health data, and knowledge of products/features

What's in it for you?

The expected hiring compensation range for this position is $117,500 - $161,600 annually. This is a remote opportunity with the ability to work from anywhere within the U.S.

The total compensation package for this position may include other elements, such as a sign-on bonus, long term incentives, and annual bonuses. This role is eligible to participate in the Legal & General America Annual Incentive Plan. The current target payment for the position is 20% of base salary, modified for corporate and individual performance. Bonuses are pro-rated based on start date. This role has 20 vacation days and 10 sick days that are accrued on a bi-weekly basis. Employees also have 9 paid holidays throughout the calendar year.
